Nikon Coolpix 7900
While the 7MP Nikon Coolpix 7900 is a great compact camera, it isn’t for everybody. Beginning and intermediate users will love the creative possibilities of the 7900’s scene modes, but the compact camera lacks the manual settings that experienced shooters will want for more control.
One of the more practical and interesting features of the 7900 is the Face Priority AF mode, a portrait-focusing feature included in the portrait scene assist mode. It works well, though it won’t work in every portrait situation, such as capturing someone in profile. With just a few improvements, though, this technology would really be worth using in the future.
One disappointment was the 2-inch LCD, especially when 2.5- and even 3-inch LCDs are becoming more common, but I am sure the smaller screen will help battery life a little.
The camera booted up in 3.88 seconds, which was acceptable if a bit slow, but the recycle time was very good, clocking in at 2.3 seconds. The camera has a slightly noticeable shutter lag and in Auto mode, it failed to capture the action we wanted, which is certainly a problem, though pretty typical of many digital cameras.
The Coolpix 7900 and its 5MP twin, the Coolpix 5900, have some wonderful features, especially for beginners. For a newer camera there are just certain things that are not acceptable anymore, and this camera has all of those in spades. With its slow boot-up time, lack of manual settings and slightly noticeable shutter lag this camera is far from perfect.
