Canon SD500/IXUS 700
The latest addition to Canon’s Digital Elph/IXUS line is the SD500 (IXUS 700 in Europe) which is a 7.1 megapixel resolution digital camera with a really sleek look. This new camera offers a 3X optical zoom and a 2-inch LCD monitor.
Although the SD500 is a very compact camera, Canon has also made sure to put in an optical viewfinder, which is becoming increasingly rare on the smallest lines of cameras. The viewfinder is quite plain, providing only a cross at its centre and when the zoom is set to the wide angle end, the lens can be seen through the viewfinder. Nevertheless, it is nice to have available, and it comes in handy when the monitor is difficult to see because of direct sunlight, or when power needs to be saved.
Some noticeable issues with the camera include, no full manual mode, and the lack of indication for aperture and shutter speed on the monitor, but most average consumers will not need either, and so to them the downsides are not even worth mentioning.
The approximate retail price as of September 2005 is around $500 USD.
