Ricoh Caplio R3 Review

Ricoh Caplio R3Trusted Reviews has a look at the Ricoh Caplio R3, a 5 megapixel digital camera with a better than average optical zoom.

Digital cameras have got so sophisticated in the past couple of years that it is getting increasingly difficult for a new model to make any sort of impact, especially if it comes from a company outside of the “big five”. Take this Ricoh Caplio R3 for example. It’s a pocket-sized compact with a 2.5in LCD monitor, 7.1x optical zoom, image stabilization and a 5 megapixel CCD. In most respects it has an extremely impressive specification for just £219, but it seems that most people have completely ignored it.

Ricoh GR Digital

Ricoh GR DigitalI think the styling is horrible on the GR line of cameras, but the people at Ricoh must think otherwise as they have announced an 8 megapixel GR Digital camera that has the same type of styling as the popular 35mm analog brothers. The GR Digital is said to inherit the ’superb image quality’ from the earlier film versions.

There is a 2.5-inch LCD and Ricoh didn’t make an optical viewfinder as a standard feature but instead offers an externally attached optional viewfinder. The Ricoh GR has 26mb of internal memory, and accepts SD memory cards to increase its storage.

The Ricoh GR will be available in October priced around $700 USD.

Ricoh Caplio R3

Ricoh Caplio R3Ricoh Japan has today unveiled a new digital camera model, the Ricoh Caplio R3, that crams a 7.1x optical zoom lens into an ultracompact body. Ricoh is marketing the camera as the smallest digicam in the world with a 5x or greater optical zoom lens.

Thickness is kept down courtesy of a new “double retracting lens system”, which separately moves two lens elements into the optical path when the lens extends as the camera is powered up, and removes them again as the camera powers off. Despite this relatively complex mechanism, the camera starts up in just 1.1 seconds.

Other features include a prefocused shutter lag of 0.007 seconds, two frames per second burst shooting, 2.5″ LCD display but no optical or electronic viewfinders, and macro focusing to 1cm. Images are stored on SD / MMC cards or the 26MB of built-in memory.

The Caplio R3 will be available in both black and silver colour. Pricing and availability have not been announced at this time.
