Kodak EasyShare V570 Review
Imaging Resource has a review up of the EasyShare V570 from Kodak.
At first blush the Kodak V570 is just another small, stylish digital camera with a 5.0 megapixel imager. Closer inspection reveals a 2.5 inch LCD screen, a slim, lightweight body, and a retro, almost console-TV design sensibility. It’s when you power the camera up and that lens cover slices out of the way that the uniqueness begins to show. No lens comes out–but that’s not unusual. Many digital cameras have folded optics where the entire lens is inside the camera body. The surprise is that there are two lenses. The one on top is not just an artistically-placed optical viewfinder, it’s another lens. Two folded optics, each with their own 5.0 megapixel sensor. The Kodak V570’s top lens is wide angle, fixed at 23mm, and the bottom lens is a 39-117mm zoom.
In the end the camera manages to earn a Dave’s Pick rating from the site as it created a positive user experience despite a variety of negatives listed for the camera.
Kodak Bluetooth Digital Camera Revealed
A new Bluetooth enabled digital camera will be hitting the world at somepoint, or atleast thats our guess since Kodak revealed an image of it on the FCC website.
From MobileWhack:
The model, as yet unnamed, was revealed on the FCC’s website when the Bluetooth component - which fortunately for us has a different FCC ID - was approved by the FCC.
The Bluetooth module is supposed to be professionally installed - so is it like an add-on that you get done at Kodak authorized centers? It’s hard to tell.
Should be interesting to see if it is really worth having, as many people are putting a thumbs down to most of the wifi cameras.
Kodak EasyShare C643 Review
DigitalCameraInfo takes a first look at the C643 from Kodak, and creates a review out of it.
The Kodak C643 is a 6 MP point-and-shoot camera with 3x optical zoom. It uses the company’s EasyShare docking system to simplify printing of snapshots, and it has a full range of competitive features such as a 30 fps movie mode, a large LCD screen and a full spectrum of shooting presets. Unlike most of the competition, it has an optical viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen.
They list the target market of this cameras as Point-and-Shooters, people who are looking for something simple to replace their old film camera and don’t want to get all confused with all the features and whatnot that the digital world of photography has brought.
While they don’t find the C643 all that exciting, they do list it as a solid and dependable camera for those just starting out.

Kodak: Four New Digital Cameras
ROCHESTER, February 17 – Eastman Kodak Company today reaffirmed its commitment to providing high-quality, innovative products to help retailers succeed in today’s changing marketplace.
According to the most recent Photo Marketing Association (PMA) reports, total digital camera images for 2005 are estimated at 17 billion, with 22 billion projected for 2006 and 26 billion for 2007. This creates a tremendous opportunity for the industry to help consumers capture, share, archive and print these images. And as Kodak continues to deliver innovative solutions for digital printing, retailers can profit from a plethora of opportunities.
Kodak’s newest retail printing solution, the KODAK Digital Picture System 900 (DPS 900), is a unique system giving retailers an affordable way to offer onsite printing of both film and digital media, thereby tapping into the rapidly expanding digital market while also retaining important revenue from film customers as the market transitions. The DPS 900 builds on the proven technology in Kodak’s award-winning Picture Kiosk family, the most widely used digital printing kiosk at retail today, with nearly 75,000 units installed worldwide.
Combining Kodak’s powerful Picture Kiosk G4 platform and award-winning KODAK 6850 and 8800 thermal photo printers with a 35 mm film scanner, the DPS 900 provides a total photo solution for retailers of virtually any size. Compared with a digital mini-lab, the KODAK Digital Picture System 900 has a significantly lower total cost of operation, including lower capital investment and labor costs. Additionally, it is much easier to operate and maintain, and offers modularity and flexibility to allow far more options for the retailer, including the ability to create unique, high margin products. As film volumes decline, the DPS 900 is an ideal printing solution for digital prints too.
Consumers also benefit from the outstanding image quality and durability of prints made with the DPS 900. Enabled with KODAK PERFECT TOUCH Technology, this system enhances each image to reveal more vibrant colors, richer detail and fewer dark shadows, and thanks to the quality of Kodak’s high-speed thermal printers, prints are wipeable, waterproof, stain-resistant and last a lifetime under typical home display conditions. The DPS 900 will be available beginning in May in US and Canada.
“The DPS 900 brings ease and speed for printing digital and film media at retail, without the huge investment of a mini lab,” said Phil Faraci, President, Consumer Digital Imaging Group and Senior Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “This new solution fills an important niche for retailers who want to tap into the rapidly expanding digital marketplace while retaining important revenue from film customers as the market continues to transition. This affordable full-service photo solution offers the benefits of increased volume and additional revenue for retailers while providing a high-quality printing solution for consumers.”

Kodak and Bibble Join Forces
There is going to be tons of Kodak news today, so hold on tight.
The first bit of news is the fact that Bibble and Kodak are joining up to optimize the connections between Kodak cameras and Bibble’s software.
New cross-licensing and co-marketing agreement creates workflow improvements for imaging professionals
ORLANDO, February 24 – Eastman Kodak Company and Bibble Labs today announced a cross-licensing and co-marketing agreement that will allow both companies to offer new, improved products to imaging professionals that further strengthens Kodak’s ‘Connect with Pro Quality’ products and programs. Under the agreement, Kodak is licensing to Bibble two proprietary technologies, the KODAK COLORFLOW Color Management Module (CMM) and the KODAK COLORFLOW ICC Input API. New versions of Bibble’s highly successful professional workflow software will integrate both of these technologies to create a best practices data path for generating finished files suitable for display and printing on KODAK output systems with minimal image adjustments.
In return, Bibble is licensing to Kodak their RAW format library and conversion engine. Using this valuable tool in select KODAK output systems will enhance interoperability allowing for easier printing from RAW format files.
Photographers will be able to carry out their image optimization in RAW mode and pass that information on to Pro labs along with the original RAW file. The lab will then be able to take in both the original RAW file as well as the file containing the photographers suggested modifications into lab software architecture, such as KODAK PROFESSIONAL Digital Print Production Software/DP2, for further processing and printing. This will result in an even higher level of image quality and satisfaction between Pro lab and photographer. The first RAW-enabled system integrated into DP2 Version 8.1 is expected to be available later this year.
“We are excited about the opportunity to work with Kodak and to offer our customers the important advancements available with Bibble Professional Workflow software,” said Eric Hyman President and CEO of Bibble Labs.
“Kodak and Bibble both bring to the table unique, powerful tools that are proven assets to imaging professionals,” said John Bricklemyer, Worldwide Product Manager, Pro Photographer Software, Eastman Kodak Company. “By working together we are poised to raise the bar for the entire industry and significantly improve the quality and consistency of Image output for the Pro Photographer.”
Bibble Labs, Inc. will be located at PMA Booth 4889.
Kodak’s Digital Sales Overtake Film
In a totally unsurprising news announcement in my opinion, Kodak has released the details of its Digital sales overtaking its Film sales in 2005. I expect this will happen more and more, as film cameras are reduced to relics of the past, cheap toys, and pretty much antiques as we enter a faster moving digital age of photography. My only hope is that printing digital prints continues to get cheaper, as I worry one slip of the delete key could see all my recorded memories erased.
4th-Qtr Digital Sales Surge 45%, Led by Graphic Communications and Consumer Digital Company Exceeds Full-Year Cash Goals; Delivers $1.180 Billion in Net Cash From Operating Activities in 2005; Cash Balance Totals $1.665 Billion at Year-end 4th-Qtr GAAP Net Loss of $52 Million ($0.18 Per Share), Largely Reflecting Restructuring Charges, Tax Benefits and Cumulative Effect of an Accounting Change
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 30 — Eastman Kodak Company today reported that revenue rose 12% in the fourth quarter, led by a 45% increase in the sale of digital products and services. The performance includes strong demand for the market-leading offerings from the company’s consumer digital portfolio and the successful completion of the company’s acquisition program to support its Graphic Communications business. For all of 2005, digital sales represented 54% of total revenue, marking the first time in the company’s history that digital revenue exceeded traditional.
On the basis of generally accepted accounting principles in the U.S. (GAAP), the company reported a fourth-quarter loss of $52 million, or $0.18 per share. This largely stems from $283 million in after-tax restructuring charges, partially offset by the previously announced tax audit settlement between the company and the Internal Revenue Service that resulted in the reversal of certain tax accruals totaling $243 million.
For the fourth quarter of 2005:
- Sales totaled $4.197 billion, an increase of 12% from $3.759 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004. Digital revenue totaled $2.674 billion, a 45% increase from $1.850 billion. Traditional revenue totaled $1.514 billion, a 21% decline from $1.905 billion.
- The GAAP net loss was $52 million, or $0.18 per share, compared with a GAAP loss of $59 million, or $0.20 per share, in the year-ago period.
- The company’s fourth-quarter loss from continuing operations, before interest, other income, net, and income taxes was $162 million, compared with a loss of $236 million in the year-ago quarter.
- Digital earnings were $161 million, and were favorably impacted by a number of items, including a year-over-year increase in royalty income, which reflects the company’s continuing progress in the monetization of its intellectual property, as well as the favorable impact resulting from the company’s Graphic Communications Group acquisition program.
“Kodak is now a thriving digital company,” said Antonio M. Perez, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Eastman Kodak Company. “The fourth quarter marked the first time that we managed the company as it will be run in 2006, and the digital earnings performance was exceptional. And for all of 2005, we made tremendous progress on our digital transformation. We completed an aggressive acquisition program that established Kodak as a powerhouse in the graphic communications market, we strengthened our market position in consumer digital with several innovative new product introductions, and we made substantial progress on our goal of reducing our traditional manufacturing footprint, while benefiting from the strong cash flows available from that business. We enjoy a solid cash position, and we are determined to expand profit margins in the sizable digital businesses that we have assembled.”
Kodak Network of Pro Photographers
Kodak is creating a service in which people will be able to find professional photographers in their area and the right one for their needs. It should be interesting to see if Kodak can get enough professionals to sign up to make the service worthwhile, but if anyone can do it, a big company like Kodak should be able to.
Press Release:
New Service Will Educate, Assist Consumers in Selecting the Right Photographer For Their Needs
AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 22 – Today, Eastman Kodak Company announced the development of a robust professional photographer locator service for consumers, available spring 2006, and is currently seeking professional photographers to populate the database. The KODAK Network of Professional Photographers will act as a reference and referral guide for those seeking the services of a professional photographer.
Professional photographers can register free of charge as Premium Members of ProPass, an e-zine that offers subscribers solutions to achieving their artistic and business goals at www.kodak.com/go/propass. Photographers can list their credentials, professional affiliations, as well as provide links to their web site, directly connecting consumers with samples of their work. KODAK Network of Professional Photographers is yet another tool Kodak is providing in its support of professional photographers.
”Kodak realizes there are a lot of criteria in choosing a quality professional photographer,” said Christopher Van Zandt, Americas Region, Director Professional Output. “Many consumers don’t fully understand the benefits of professional photography, and that different situations are best served by photographers with specific skills and talents. Moments that are irreplaceable require the skill of a professional to capture the composition, reproduction and preservation of a quality image. Kodak’s Network of Professional Photographers is a service that will demystify this process for consumers, guiding them through the process in an effort to help them select the right photographer for their individual needs. ”
