HP Recalls 679,000 Cams or Update your Firmware

Hewlett-Packard is recalling around 679,000 Photosmart R707 digital cameras, but you don’t really need to send your camera in if you feel comfortable updating the firmware on the camera yourself. The problem is that the batteries are overheating and could potentially start a fire, but the problem only occurs if you plug in your camera when it does not contain rechargeable batteries.

So if you only use rechargeables, you should be fine, but if you put in one use batteries, grab the update first or send in your camera to have it done or you risk lighting yourself on fire.

Check out HP’s website for the firmware update, or call 1 (866) 304-7117 to see about sending your camera in.

HP Photosmart R727 Review

HP Photosmart R727Digital Camera Resource Page has a review up on the HP Photosmart R727, which just recently got a new model to replace it the R827. The R727 is a 6 Megapixel camera with a 3X zoom lens, and a 2.5″ LCD.

It seems that when HP was designing the Photosmart R727 that the engineers spent a little too much time on bells and whistles and not enough time on photo quality. The R727 has tons of very useful features, but it’s photo quality is lacking, which makes this little camera hard to recommend.

The Photosmart R727 is a compact (but not tiny) camera with a stylish brushed metal body. Build quality is excellent for the most part, though the door over the I/O ports could bust off easily, and I’m not a huge fan of the plastic tripod mount either. Like many ultra-thin cameras the R727 has an internal, folded optics 3X zoom lens, but do watch your fingers: they can easily be in your photos. The camera doesn’t have too many buttons, which is both good and bad: you won’t be confused by all the controls, but you’ll have to do more digging in the menu system instead. The R727 has a large, high resolution 2.5″ LCD display that’s quite easy to see in low light conditions.

So there you have it, numerous gadgets and features on the inside, but a picture quality not really worth your time. If you like HP, and all the gadgets they include, your best bet would probably be to skip the R727 and wait for reviews of the R827 to see how its image quality holds up.

HP Photosmart R927 Review

HP Photosmart R927Digital Camera Resource Page has a review of the HP Photosmart R927, a compact digital camera with an 8 megapixel sensor.

The R927 is a compact (but not tiny) camera made of brushed metal. It feels solid in the hand and it’s well put together, save for the door over the battery/memory compartment. The battery didn’t like to stay in its slot, but I figure that it’s just my camera with that problem. The R927 has a beautiful 3 inch LCD display that has average visibility outdoors and very good (but grainy) low light visibility. The LCD has good resolution, so images are nice and sharp. There’s no optical viewfinder on the camera, though. In order to charge the battery or transfer photos to your computer you’ll need to use the included camera dock, which many will find to be a hassle. If you want to view photos on your television you’ll have to drop eighty bucks for the fancy R-series camera dock.

In the end they list a full group of alternatives, not giving the R927 a recommended rating or anything. With their longer list of things they did not like than did like, I am not too surprised though.

HP PhotoSmart M22 Review

HP PhotoSmart M22Pocket-Lint takes a look at the entry-level oriented PhotoSmart M22 from HP, and it ends up with a seven out of ten in their review scale, which means it is two steps above average, and three steps from perfect.

The M22 is a sweet little digital camera pitched at the entry-level end of the market but with a fair specification and with good build quality. An all-metal weatherproofed body is the standout feature while in terms of build; particularly at this price/level, it meets the “IEC specification 60529, Grade 4″, a standard for such weatherproofery. In other words, it can withstand “water spray” from any direction.

One of the worst things about the camera, that they highlight is its battery life, which in this day and age, is just totally unacceptable. They reported performance so dismal that after less than a dozen shots, they needed to put in a new pair of AA batteries.

HP Photosmart R727 and R927

BOEBLINGEN, GERMANY, JANUARY 1, 2006 – HP today announced the launch of the HP Photosmart R727 and R927 Digital Cameras.

No bigger than a deck of cards, these two style-led, visually inspiring cameras feature a wealth of advanced features that are ideal for budding photographers. With all the panache of their award winning predecessors, these sleek, metal encased digital cameras (the HP Photosmart R927 Digital Camera comes in stainless steel and the HP Photosmart R727 Digital Camera in aluminum) can capture even more intricate details from any scene.

With 3x optical zoom and 6 or 8.1 megapixel (MP) resolution respectively, keen photographers can enlarge any unique shots up to poster size, without damaging image quality.

Despite measuring just 23mm and 26mm thin respectively, the HP Photosmart R727 and R927 digital cameras feature large full colour LCD screens of 6.4 cm and 7.6 cm with a 170 degree viewing angle, making it even easier to capture, view and make edits to images using the on-board menu options.

Photographers of all levels can take advantage of a full suite of HP’s most advanced Real Life technologies, which have been designed to allow users to take impressive photographs every time.

One such technology is HP’s unique Instant Image Advice system, which indicates problems within an image that need correction, such as a shot being over exposed. After automatically scanning an image the program takes users to an advice screen that provides instruction on how to make the adjustments needed to get the perfect shot. Further HP’s Real Life technologies include In-camera Panorama Stitching, an ideal tool for those photographers taking panoramic shots and wide angle images, which stitches up to 5 single shots together to create one image.

HP’s Automatic In-Camera Red-Eye Removal and HP Video Prints means users can select a single scene from video footage on the camera and save this as an image for sharing or printing. HP’s newly developed Design Gallery which includes a portfolio of tricks such as 10 different border effects, 12 different filters and four colour effects to help personalise images is included. All of HP’s Real Life technologies and the Design Gallery can be used without having to connect to a PC or download any additional software. Sharing and printing photos with these cameras is easy. Photos can be printed directly from the camera without having to connect to a PC using Pictbridge Technology or card slots. Sharing photos is just as simple when using HP’s included Photosmart Premier software.

This software provides a range of printing options and allows users to upload images to a secure site which friends or family can access in order to view images. For photographers looking for a completely wire free experience, both of these cameras can be connected to the optional HP Photosmart 6222 Wireless Dock. With this dock users can use the accompanying remote control to wirelessly manage their snapshots and navigate through a TV interface.
