Olympus SP-700 Review

Olympus SP-700 Megapixel reviews the Olympus SP-700, a compact digital camera with a pretty decent look, though I dislike the lack of an optical viewfinder.

The Olympus SP-700 is the first small compact of the SP series. Offering a 6-megapixel resolution, and a 3X optical zoom that does not extend past the front of the camera, the SP-700 also stands out for its very large 3-inch LCD monitor.

The front of the camera is made of brushed metal — the finish for which can be either silver or blue — with a chrome ring around the lens trim while the rest of the camera is covered in a black plastic. Indeed, the finishing on the SP-700 is excellent.

The camera manages to net a rating of 8.4 for functionality and 8.6 for photographic qualities. They loved the image quality and color rendition, as well as the 3 inch high definition monitor, but did not like the soft focus with wide angle images, the weak flash or the small arrow pad that was lacking in precision.

Casio Exilim EX-Z120 Review

Casio Exilim EX-Z120DigiCamReview reviews the Casio Exilim EX-Z120, a pocket sized digital camera that is easy to use. It features a seven megapixel sensor and sports a two inch LCD on the back.

Image quality is good to very good, the images have very good colour, with good saturation, contrast and detail - although images are slightly soft, and could do with sharpening, either in camera or afterwards. The camera did a good job focusing - although the camera occasionally struggled in low-light, the majority of the time focusing in low-light was successful.

The camera is very easy to use, the menu system is easy to use and there is a good layout of buttons and controls. The camera speed is a mixed bag, with some aspects of the camera very quick, and others quite slow, in use the sluggishness isn’t that noticeable, and the very quick aspects are noticeable, such as the very quick menu response, the very quick playback mode, and the very quick shutter response.

It earns an overall rating of eight out of ten, though for value it earns a nine out of ten.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 Review

Digital Camera Resouce Page has a review up on the Cyber-shot DSC-W50 a point and shoot digital camera.

The DSC-W50 is a thin metal camera with a 6 Megapixel CCD, 3X optical zoom lens, and 2.5″ LCD display. The camera is well put together for the most part, save for the doors covering the DC-in port and battery/memory card slots. The W50 is easy to use with just one hand, and its compact size allows it to go just about anywhere you do. The LCD display is big in size, though a bit of letdown in the resolution department. Low light visibility was above average, but not the best I’ve seen. Thankfully Sony included an optical viewfinder on the W50, which hardly any ultra-compacts have these days. In another positive move, there are plenty of accessories available for the camera, including conversion lenses and an underwater case.

If you need manual controls this camera is not for you, but if you just want to take a picture, then you should definetly take a look at the Cyber-shot DSC-W50.

FujiFilm FinePix A350 Review

FujiFilm FinePix A350Laptop Magazine takes a quick look at the A350 from FujiFilm, and says that the sub-$200 camera is only worthy of an average rating of two point five out of five.

Unfortunately, this camera has a decidedly unfriendly interface, with most controls only accessible from the LCD’s menu system and a clumsy, hard-to-use Zoom control. This camera’s worst sin, though, is that its image quality is mediocre at best; skin tones are too red, the flash runs hot, and the focus is a bit soft.

Sony Debuts 8GB Compact Vault Drive

Sony Electronics today showed off their new Compact Vault 8GB drive. This new drive is compatible with Compact Flash Type II slots, and provides another three gigabytes over the current 5GB version.

An ideal companion to high-end digital cameras, the new drive’s 8GB capacity holds up to 2,560 JPEG images (at 3MB each) or 320 minutes of MPEG4 video, and has transfer speeds of up to 12MB per second.

Measuring just over 1 ½ inches wide and less than 1 ½ inches high, the hard disk drive is designed for photo enthusiasts and so-called prosumers.

“The 8GB Compact Vault adds to our growing lineup of professional-based digital media for photographers on all experience levels,” said Michael Lucas, director of marketing for Sony Electronics’ Media and Application Solutions Division. “The drive is very competitive in today’s price-conscious, quality-driven market.”

The 8GB Compact Vault will be available in June with a suggested retail price of $259.99.
